1 Topic: Round, Flat, Static & Dynamic Characters Essential Question: Who are different types of characters in a story?

2 Round Cornell Notes Question: What is a Round Character?
Characters that are described in depth, with many details, are well-rounded characters. The main character in a story is almost always Round. You feel like you know a Round character extremely well

3 Flat Cornell Notes Question: What is a Flat Character?
Characters that are not described well Readers are not given much information about them

4 Round or Flat? Cornell Notes Question:
How can I tell if a character is round or flat? Write down characteristics of the character. If your list is long, with many characteristics, then the character is round. If your list is short, not many characteristics at all, then the character is flat.

5 Internal Change Cornell Notes Question: --What is internal change?
changes which occur within the character Examples: a change in his/her personality a change in his/her outlook on life, a change in his/her values overall change in the nature of the character.

6 Static Cornell notes Question: What is a static character?
Static = not moving or changing the character remains basically the same throughout the entire story. The character does not undergo any internal changes (changed WITHIN themselves)

7 Dynamic Cornell Notes Question:
What is a dynamic character? a character that undergoes an internal change sometime between the beginning and end of the story. The change in the character is usually crucial (important) to the story itself.

8 Dynamic EXAMPLE: Say a main character goes through a life-altering experience, such as a race car driver getting into an accident. If the driver's personality changes, and he is no longer willing to take on the risk of driving a race car, the character would be dynamic.

9 Static or Dynamic? Cornell Notes Question: How can I tell if a character is static or dynamic? Ask these 3 questions: 1. How does the character feel about him/her/itself? 2. How does the character act towards others? 3. What is the character’s goal? Have the answers to these questions changed from the beginning to end of the story?
