1 Propeller Shaft survey

2 Propeller Shaft survey
Periodicity is defined in Rules Pt A, Ch 2, Sec 2, 5.5 and Figure 2 10 years periodicity granted provided that: The design is in accordance with the rules Modified survey conducted after 5 years + 6 months Stern tube lub oil analysis is conducted every 6 months MON-SHAFT granted provided : Design is in accordance with the rules Temperature monitoring system fitted to stern tube bearing Partial survey conducted every 5 years + 6 months Stern tube L.O. Analysis is conducted every 6 months

3 Propeller Shaft survey
Review log book & records for: Stern tube L.O. analysis L.O. consumption Stern tube bearing temperature (if applicable) Verify with the Chief Engineer if any abnormal vibration Shaft withdrawn and examined: Exposed parts Cone and, if applicable, key & key-way Bearing journal surfaces Shaft in way of seals Thread, nut & locking arrangement, coupling & bolts

4 Propeller Shaft survey
Forward part of taper and key-way crack tested Stern tube bush inspected for: Condition of white metal Loss of bonding Excessive clearance Clearances recorded by: Measuring, jacking, feeler, poker gauge

5 Propeller Shaft survey
Shaft seal to inspect for : Wear & tear Damage to sealing faces Damaged ‘O’ seals Liner wear Propeller inspected for : Blades for damage and cracking Taper bore for damage and fit On assembly check : Jacking pressure Movement Check seal for leakage

6 C. P. Propeller Shaft inspected as before except that :
Coupling flange to be inspected Studs, nuts & locking arrangements Propeller blades to inspect : Seals Blade operating connections to inspect, clearances to check Operating system to examine & test Piping to inspect & test Hydraulic pumps to examine & test L. O. tank low level alarm to test

11 Propeller shaft – Liner(s)
Check liner for damage & wear Check shrink fit on shaft Inspect liner / propeller seal Check inboard gland Inspect Lignum Vitae bush Measure clearances Check sheathing (if fitted)

12 Modified Survey Check log book & records for :
L.O. analysis & consumption Bearing temperature monitoring (if applicable) Draw propeller off taper Inspect taper and bore of propeller NDT of forward 30% of taper Examine gland & seals

13 Modified Survey Record clearances
Inspect propeller for damage / cracks Check jacking pressure for refitting Check nut locking arrangements Test seal for leakage

14 Thruster Review log book & records for L.O. analysis & consumption
Inspect & remove propeller Inspect shaft / NDT taper Inspect threads, nut & locking arrangements Inspect seals Inspect hull liner for corrosion / erosion
