ATI Neurostimulation system:
Electronic Aspirin Presentation by: Sarah Borges
2
ATI Neurostimulation System
Known commonly as “Electronic aspirin” Only one company developing this device- ATI Consists of 2 separate pieces Remote control Implantable device Designed to treat cluster headaches
3
Cluster headaches Also known as “suicide” headaches
Condition of severe unilateral temporal/orbital pain Headaches last 15 min-3 hours Symptoms include: Watery eyes Droopy eyelid Nasal congestion Localized swelling Associated with the SPG (sphenopalatine ganglion) bundle Affects 0.2% of United States population
4
Other Treatment Methods
Oxygen treatment with a tank Cumbersome Oral medication Run the risk of an allergic reaction Sphenopalatine ablation Killing local SPG area via heat Last resort: can lead to partial facial paralysis
5
ATI System Design Two separate parts:
Device Almond-sized 2 terminals Remote control Hand-held, rechargeable Upon onset of headache, patient places remote to device, sending electrical signal to device Device stimulates SPG bundle in a way that prevents the release of pain-related neurotransmitters
6
implantation procedure
Surgery is about as extensive as removal of wisdom teeth ~1-3 hours in length Device is implanted on the side of the head patient experiences headaches more: within gum tissue, below eye
7
Current results System still in clinical trial phase
Currently testing device on 120 patients since Will continue monitoring patients for one year Preliminary results: 75% patients have recorded improvement in their ability to function normally in their daily lives 68% report experiencing less severe headaches 31% report a decrease in the amount of headaches they have weekly
8
Benefit of ati system over other treatments
Less bulky/more conspicuous than an O2 tank Does not risk patient having an allergic reaction or conflicting prescriptions for other health implications Unlike ablation, ATI system has temporary effects ATI system can be removed if need be
9
Foreseen disadvantages
More difficult to stop treatment than O2 tank/oral medications: need surgery to remove Can only treat one side of head Have to remember to charge remote control and bring everywhere Electronic device: has the potential to malfunction Only treatment for patients of cluster headaches
10
Future direction FDA approval
Design to make available to patients suffering from migraines, tension headaches, and other types of facial pain due to other conditions they may have
