7 Marie Tussaud was a French artist known for her wax sculptures. She was born in France in the 18th century. Her Farther, a soldier, was killed in the Seven Year’s War just two Months before Marie was born. Her mother was a housekeeper for Dr. Phillippe Curtius, who was a physician skilled in wax modelling. Curtius taught Marie the art of wax modelling. She started to work for him and showed a lot of talent. During the French Revolution, Marie made death masks of royalty and decapitated revolutionaries. When Curtius died in 1794, he left his collection of waxworks to Marie.

8 In 1802 Marie Tussaud went to London together with her husband. She traveled with her collection throughout Great Britain and Ireland. She established her first permanent exhibition in Baker Street in 1835.

9 Madame Tussaud died in 1850, but her descendants kept her vision alive. In 1884, Madame Tussaud’s grandson moved the wax museum to its current location on Marylebone Road. In 1884, Madame Tussaud’s grandson moved the wax museum to its current location on Marylebone Road.

25 It’s a careful job - more than 250 precise measurements and photos are needed before work on the figure can begin. The sculptors use the measurements and photos to make a clay model of the head. Next they make a metal skeleton of the body to which they add clay in the shape of the body. Because wax shrinks, all figures are made 2% larger than the actual celebrities. Then moulds of the head and body are made separately. A hot wax mixture is put into the moulds then left to cool and harden. Once the wax is ready, it’s time for hair and make up. Each strand of hair has to be inserted individually and the job usually takes around five weeks. Teeth and eyes are added before the figure is coloured. The paint has to be applied in layers to create a realistic skin colour and texture. Finally, hundreds of hours after the careful job, its show time for the finished figure at Madame Tussauds museum.
