2 Overview Background on UCOP High School Articulation New A-G Course Lists & Course Management Portal Connecting “a-g” to K-12 standards Preparing students for college & future careers
3
UCOP High School Articulation Our mission: –Communicate and implement UC faculty “a-g” policy –Evaluate high school courses for quality and rigor –Support California educators and administrators –Facilitate students’ preparation for college
4
Changes in K-12 Landscape California’s Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) Local Control & Accountability Plan (LCAP) California Career Pathways Trust (CCPT) Specialized Secondary Programs (SSP) Academic Performance Index (API) SAT & ACT What about UC & “a-g”?

Changes in UC Articulation BEFORENOW UC High School Articulation Analyst Role GatekeeperFacilitator Approach to Reviews Checklist/quantitative approachHolistic/qualitative approach Level of Analysis Detailed, narrow, ground levelBroad strokes, flexible, high level Expectations of Course Content Traditional subject area courses Interdisciplinary/integrated/ innovative courses Feedback Philosophy “This course is not approved for XYZ reasons.” “This course can be approved if…” Course Review Outcomes Inefficient policy implementation Conservative selectivity Streamlined policy implementation Liberal advocacy
6
A-G Course Lists New feature highlights: –Global, customizable search engine (like Google) –Ability to bookmark URLs for any institution’s list –Cleaner, clearer user interface Future enhancements: –Ability to search by institution type (e.g., online schools) –Ability to search by course type (e.g., computer science courses approved in area “c” vs. “g”) –More robust search results based on relevancy of search terms https://hs-articulation.ucop.edu/agcourselists
7
A-G Course Management Portal (CMP) New feature highlights: –Individual user registration & system access –Streamlined course submission form –Pilot program for district- or school network-level “a-g” course list management –Access to all approved “a-g” course descriptions https://hs-articulation.ucop.edu/agcmp REVIEW of “a-g” course submissions REPOSITORY of “a-g” courses RESOURCE for college- preparatory curriculum in California

Connecting A-G to K-12 Standards What questions/challenges do you face with implementing Common Core State Standards & Next Generation Science Standards? In what direction is your school/organization headed?
10
Not Uncommon: Challenges of Common Core Math Pathways What math sequence does UC require? Minimally complete the 15 “a-g” course pattern, including 3 foundational years of mathematics (“c”) Traditional & integrated math accepted by UC: –Algebra I or Mathematics I –Geometry or Mathematics II –Algebra II or Mathematics III
11
Not Uncommon: Challenges of Common Core Math Pathways How will fulfilling the area “c” requirement be different under Common Core? Highly recommend completing advanced math courses –Fall 2014: nearly 93% of applicants completed at least one type of advanced math course Statistics vs. calculus Emphasis on mathematical practices & quantitative reasoning skills
12
Not Uncommon: Challenges of Common Core Math Pathways How will UC support statewide CCSS implementation? Continued faculty & staff engagement within higher education & with K-12 A-G Course Management Portal as a key resource 2016 UC Articulation Conferences on math education –Facilitate K-12 & higher education connections –Define new math paths from high school through college –Establish shared expectations for best preparing students in math
13
Next Steps: Next Generation Science Standards UC initiatives addressing the interconnections of “a-g” & Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS): Updated laboratory science (“d”) course criteria to align with NGSS Proposed UC science faculty advisory committee –Review & revise, as needed, the area “d” subject requirement –Submit recommendations to UC faculty Board of Admissions & Relations with Schools (BOARS)
14
Next Steps: Next Generation Science Standards A-G Course Management Portal (CMP) –Statewide resource for educators seeking to develop NGSS- aligned courses that have earned area “d” approval UC faculty engagement –K-12: California Science Curriculum Framework & Evaluation Criteria Committee (CFCC) –Higher education: Science faculty work group for Intersegmental Committee of the Academic Senates (ICAS)
15
Preparing Students for College & Careers Focus on application of knowledge & skills Increase in project-based/experiential learning Blending of traditional academics & career technical education (CTE) –UC Curriculum Integration (UCCI) Initiative: http://ucci.ucop.edu/
