Examine the charts, graphics, and reading excerpts in Chapter 12: Giving o Make a list of questions you would like to have answered as we go through the chapter.

Video 1.1 (5 minutes): I Am Just One Journal : 1. Complete the values and talents activities before responding to the journal question. (WB pg. 256) 2. How can giving of your time and talents align with your core values?

How can you actively reject the media-generated stereotypes of today’s teens? o Begin the process of discovering the real you—your unique values, interests and passions. How can knowing what you value help when it comes to giving? o Knowing what you value will help you select an organization or charity to serve.

Video 2.1 (10 minutes): Open Hands Build Wealth Journal : 1. When you are doing your monthly budget, why do you think it is important to have “giving” placed at the very top?

Explain what Dave means when he says “being wealthy is not an end - it’s a means to an end.” o Money is a means for helping others. o You shouldn’t place more value on money than on people. What is John D. Rockefeller most remembered for? o He’s most remembered for his philanthropy, not wealth. o He supported education, churches, and hospitals.

How does giving benefit both the giver and receiver? Other than money, what are some other ways to give and help others? o Time, talents, knowledge, or your services. Identify some charities you are familiar with.

Activity : Kindness Journal o Make a list of 14 small acts of kindness, one for each day over the next two weeks. o Write a journal entry each day describing what you did and for whom. How did it make you feel? How did each person respond to your kindness? Be prepared to share some of your experiences in class.

Video 3.1 (14 minutes): Money is not the only way to give Journal : 1. List some areas of need in your school or community (youth programs, homeless shelter, humane society, roadside cleanup, nursing home, etc.)

Look at the list of ways you can give now. Select three items from the list (pg. 262) that you feel you could do for someone in the near future. Explain how the topic of giving is related to the topic of personal finance. o Personal wealth alone has no meaning. The act of giving creates a legacy and adds meaning to your journey of life. What are some character traits you would like to be remembered for?

Video 4.1 (12 minutes): Legacy Journal : 1. When have you been impacted because someone gave their time, money or talents to help you? 2. How did this affect you?

What does it mean to leave a legacy? o Your legacy is the impact you have on the world and it shows the world what really matters to you. Why is it important to start giving to others while you are young? o Giving time and money is important and possible even when you’re young. o You should learn to give while you have little so that giving comes naturally when you have a lot.

The Generosity of Future Me (30 minutes) Write a one page essay on: What ways would you like to give now? How would you like to give in the future? What can you do to ensure that you meet these goals? What you want to be known for? Exploring Areas of Need in Your Community (40 minutes)
