Free resources are available for early years to secondary in the form of recipes, interactive activities, PowerPoint presentations, worksheets and videos. Two websites that promote and support growing and cooking from primary to secondary school

4 © BRITISH NUTRITION FOUNDATION 2014 Asda’s Mini Chefs recipes will help both parents and teachers get children into the kitchen to show them what cooking is all about. There are ten recipes each with a lesson plan, teachers’ guidance notes along with information for parents. Win £10,000 worth of new kitchen kit for your school, plus an exclusive prize with dance superstar Ashley Banjo! Competition ends 24/11/2014. Nutrition notes including the new front of pack labelling have also been produced.

5 © BRITISH NUTRITION FOUNDATION 2014 A free pack for primary school pupils to help them learn more about fish and its role in a healthy varied diet. The Fish is the dish Education resource pack is designed for children aged 5-8 years. Farm to Fork trails, online field trips, Farm to Fork cooking and resources for both pupils and teachers. These include: lesson plans, recipes and activities. School visitors, resources and a forthcoming education website from Warburtons. Practical sessions cover healthy eating, getting ready to cook (food hygiene), making a sandwich or bread roll and food waste.

7 © BRITISH NUTRITION FOUNDATION 2014 The BNF main website provides nutrition information for teachers, health professionals, scientists, and the general public. The healthy living pages provide general health information whereas the nutrition science pages are more in depth. The Facts behind the headlines section would be a great source of information to challenge and extend pupils’ learning. Seasons and celebrations - this section provides information on enjoying your food and staying healthy, whatever the weather or season! Both these desserts contain 215 calories.

8 © BRITISH NUTRITION FOUNDATION 2014 Food - a fact of life provides a wealth of free resources about healthy eating, cooking, food and farming for children and young people aged 3 to 18 years. The resources are progressive, stimulate learning and support the curriculum throughout the UK. All resources are designed to ensure that consistent and up-to-date messages are delivered. Core competences – updated in 2014 and now include physical activity. A great way to assess pupils’ progression. 9 © BRITISH NUTRITION FOUNDATION 2014 The BNF Healthy Eating Week will take place from the 1 st to the 5 th June 2015. In 2014, over 4,400 schools registered to take part in the week - representing over 1.75 million children and young people! The themes for 2015 will be Food provenance, Creative cooking and Eat & drink well. There will be daily challenges with supporting information and resources available. For the first time next year, challenges and resources will be aimed at nurseries, schools and consumers.

A key feature of a webinar is the interactive element – the ability to give, receive and discuss information. eSeminars are recorded and can be downloaded from the Food a fact of life website. The FAB (food, agriculture and biotechnology) Toolkit is a free resource for schools, developed by CommNet, a European Union (EU) project which aims to help children and young people understand about EU food, fisheries, agriculture and biotechnologies research. eSeminar: 12.00 noon, 17 November 2014 - The SYNPEPTIDE project and antibiotic resistance. 12 © BRITISH NUTRITION FOUNDATION 2014 After the user has selected whether the recipe is a food or a drink and decided on a title for the front of pack label, select the ‘create label’ button. The following will appear: 1. Front of pack nutrition label 2. Save front of pack label (saves as.png file) 3. Print front of pack label 4. Back of pack nutrition label 5. Save back of pack label (saves as.png file) 6. Print back of pack label 7. Closes the label pop up box to take you back to the view summary page. Producing a front and back of pack label

13 © BRITISH NUTRITION FOUNDATION 2014 Compare a recipe to DRVs Pupils can compare a recipe or a portion of a recipe to DRVs. 1)Enter the number of portions the recipe is divided into and click calculate. 2)Click and compare with DRVs. Calculate a diet This section allows the user to calculate the energy and nutrients provided by a diet for one day. Completing this will lead to a summary sheet and a comparison of the diet to Dietary Reference Values (DRVs).
