Who was Amelia Earhart? 4 Amelia Earhart was born in Atchinson, Kansas in USA on 24 July 1897. She had an education in medicine at Hyde Park High School, at Columbia University. In 1921 she flew for the first time as a passenger, and since then had one single goal: to become a pilot. She immediately enrolled for flight lessons in los Angeles and bought her first airplane 6 months later. She joined the Zonta Club of Boston in 1928. She was the first woman to fly solo, non-stop, coast to coast across the Atlantic Ocean in May 1932 and continued to try and break her own records. She was the first woman to receive the National Geographic Society Gold Medal. During a flying tour around the world in 1937 along equator, she got missing during a record flight of 4110 km to Howland Island situated in the Pacific Ocean East of Australia, on July 2 nd 1937 and was finally declared officially dead in 1939. Several theories run around about what happened during her last flight. Since 1938 Zonta International is awarding the AE fellowship annually to 35 women pursuing PH.D/doctoral degrees in aerospace related sciences or aerospace-related engineering.
