7  Read poem by Elaine George.  Using the handout, find the personification in the poem.  Think- Pair- Share.  Discuss the message of the poem with the class. ACTIVITY

8 POEM THINGS TO THINK ABOUT: What is happening in the poem? What is happening in each stanza? Where is the personification in the poem? What is the message?

9 STANZA 1: She sleeps in her rose wood bed, under a blanket of velvet red; old and alone and forgotten, she dreams of the love she once had. Once again she recalls his caress on the curve of her hips and her breast as he moved his bow on the strings of her soul, playing her sound 'til his passion was spent. “VIOLIN” by Elaine George

10 STANZA 1:  What object is being personified?  The violin is reflecting on the love it once felt by its maestro.  She is remembering how he used to hold and play her. ANALYSIS

11 STANZA 2: They traveled the whole world over, to every city and town; the maestro, his bow and violin, bringing each curtain down. He died in a cry of sweet refrain, clutching her strings to his heart; as he fell to the floor in a final encore, tearing her world apart. “VIOLIN” by Elaine George

12 STANZA 2:  The speaker describes the memories the violin and her maestro had together.  They traveled the world performing concerts.  Her maestro died clutching the violin. This is a sign of his undeniable love for her. ANALYSIS

13 “VIOLIN” by Elaine George So she sleeps in her rose wood bed, under a blanket of velvet red; her strings still filled with the song of her soul, etched by the maestro that loved her so long ago!

14 STANZA 3:  What does it mean “sleep in her rose wood bed?”  She is placed back in her violin case.  Although she has not been played for a long time, the violin recalls the beautiful music her maestro used to play. ANALYSIS
