Background to the ChildLine Schools Service The ChildLine Schools Services is part of the NSPCC Strategy to 2016. The review of the strategy concluded that we needed to reach out to children under the age of 12. The majority of children contacting ChildLine are aged between 12 and 15 years, but often their problems start from a younger age. Younger children may not have an understanding of abuse or the support available to them to know how and when to seek help. 2

Objectives To ensure children have an understanding of abuse in all its forms, including bullying, and an ability to recognise the signs of abuse. To ensure children know how to protect themselves from all forms of abuse. To make children aware of how to get help and sources of help (including ChildLine).

30min Assembly to Y5 and Y6 60min workshop to individual Y5 and Y6 classes Delivered by two trained ChildLine volunteers How does it work?

Since 2011 Visited 9,908 Primary Schools Reached 665, 194 children 1050 volunteers across the UK Achievements to Date

“During October, ChildLine visited us to talk to the children about staying safe and discussed in a very well planned and cohesive way what to do about abuse. Workshops with individual classes followed where issues could be dealt with in more depth. As a Head teacher you worry about the appropriateness of this. My worries were unfounded because this is a sensitive and well thought out programme. It supports children and does not lecture them. It gives routes for children who need them but does not raise questions where there aren't any. I would recommend this as a professional, sound piece of intervention that all schools should have!” Claregate Primary School

You came to my school today and I really enjoyed it. I am being bullied and it gave me the confidence to go on your website and get some advice. It really helped me, and gave me a bigger understanding of abuse. It was a serious yet fun workshop. You came to my school and you were great, for I while I had been asking myself if I should phone you or ask you. Now I am 100% for it. It was interesting; it’s good to know someone is always there for you, it’s also very important to know about all the different types of abuse. Feedback from Children
