We need PhDs with additional skills and experience o Able to bid successfully for funding o Able to deliver results to industry and to funding bodies o Able to understand what industry wants AND We need universities that can respond to the needs of industry and the nation o Able to respond quickly o Able to clearly state their ‘value proposition’ o Able to encourage and incentivize faculty to pursue careers as wealth- creating researchers 5

6. Strategies: Funding More investment in R&D BUT no use complaining! We have to justify why; we have to deliver results AND We have to show the benefit to the nation So we need: STI research driven by economic planning STI research outcomes linked to economic growth 6
