Reference may have been to the decisions rendered by the high priest using the ephod, or Saul may have actually sent for the ark (where ever it was). Regardless Saul disregards it and engages the fight. In I Chron. 13:3 David said the ark had not been inquired of in the da

People mustered at Telaim 200,000 foot soldiers 10,000 men of Judah Saul comes to Amalek and waits in valley Kenites warned - had shown favor to Israel as they departed Egypt Telaim was likely in Judah. Kenites were of the family and kindred of Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, a people that dwelt in tents, which made it easy for them to remove to other lands. Also, a more recent consideration for Israel was in the action of Jael the wife of Heber in her destruction of Sisera. Famous among the Kenites was Jael, whose husband Heber had migrated to north Paleatine (Judges 4:11, 5:24. [Coffman]

[Coffman]

26 Saul’s Folly Ch. 15 Saul Rejected As King vv. 10-29
Word of the Lord comes to Samuel God regrets: Having made Saul King Saul turned back from following Him Saul has not performed His commands Samuel grieved, calls out to Lord all night God’s regret (repent) is not that He has changed; Saul changed which reversed his standing with God.

27 Saul’s Folly Ch. 15 Saul Rejected As King vv. 10-29
Samuel rises early to meet Saul Saul first in Carmel and sets up a monument for himself, then returns to Gilgal Samuel goes to Saul; Saul says, “…I have performed the commandment of the Lord.” Saul puts up a memorial for himself in Carmel first, then goes to Gilgal where the memorial stones were erected after the miraculous Jordan River crossing. This Carmel is not Mt. Carmel on the coast, but a town in the wilderness of Paran.

28 Saul’s Folly Ch. 15 Saul Rejected As King vv. 10-29
Samuel, “What then is this bleating of the sheep in my ears, and the lowing of oxen I hear?” Saul blames the people, “They have brought them… to sacrifice to the Lord your God…” Samuel, “Be quiet! …”

29 Saul’s Folly Ch. 15 Saul Rejected As King vv. 10-29

30 Saul’s Folly Ch. 15 Saul Rejected As King vv. 10-29
Samuel’s response, vv “Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of divination, and presumption is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, He has also rejected you from being king.”

31 Saul’s Folly Ch. 15 Saul Rejected As King vv. 10-29
Saul seeks forgiveness for fearing the people, but too late Samuel turns to leave, Saul grasps and tears his robe “The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you this day…”

33 God hurts when His people sin!!
Saul’s Folly Ch. 15 Agag Killed vv Samuel went no more to see Saul (cf. I Sam. 19:24) Yet Samuel mourns for Saul, and the Lord regrets that He had made Saul king over Israel God hurts when His people sin!!

34 APPLICATIONS (1) “… it may be that the Lord will work for us. For nothing restrains the Lord from saving by many or by few.” It’s not us that saves, but God’s Word Heb. 4:12 Glimpses of God’s power and glory: Elisha’s servant’s eyes opened II Kings 6:17 Stephen’s view of heaven Acts 7:55-56 Heb 4:12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 2Ki 6:17 And Elisha prayed, and said, "LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see." Then the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. Ac 7:55 But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, 56 and said, "Look! I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!“

35 APPLICATIONS (2) Oaths should be carefully made (if at all) Jesus chastises Pharisees Matt. 23: Matt. 5: Let your ‘yes’ be ‘yes’ and your ‘no’ be ‘no’

36 APPLICATIONS (3) The Lord desires obedience rather than sacrifice Hosea 6:6 Psalms 50:8-14; 51:16,17 Isaiah 1:11 Jeremiah 6:20 Micah 6:6-8 Jesus in His teaching Matt. 9:13 and 12:7 Ho 6:6 For I desire mercy and not sacrifice, And the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings. Ps 50:8 I will not rebuke you for your sacrifices Or your burnt offerings, Which are continually before Me. 9 I will not take a bull from your house, Nor goats out of your folds. 10 For every beast of the forest is Mine, And the cattle on a thousand hills. 11 I know all the birds of the mountains, And the wild beasts of the field are Mine. 12 "If I were hungry, I would not tell you; For the world is Mine, and all its fullness. 13 Will I eat the flesh of bulls, Or drink the blood of goats? 14 Offer to God thanksgiving, And pay your vows to the Most High. Ps 51:16 For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it; You do not delight in burnt offering. 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart-These, O God, You will not despise. Isa 1:11 "To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices to Me?" Says the LORD. "I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams And the fat of fed cattle. I do not delight in the blood of bulls, Or of lambs or goats. Jer 6:20 For what purpose to Me Comes frankincense from Sheba, And sweet cane from a far country? Your burnt offerings are not acceptable, Nor your sacrifices sweet to Me.“ Mic 6:6 ¶ With what shall I come before the LORD, And bow myself before the High God? Shall I come before Him with burnt offerings, With calves a year old? 7 Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, Ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? 8 He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God? Mt 9:13 "But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy and not sacrifice.' For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.“ Mt 12:7 "But if you had known what this means, 'I desire mercy and not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned the guiltless.
