Presentation on theme: "Learning Targets “I can . . .”"— Presentation transcript:

1 Learning Targets “I can . . .”
-Give examples of how non-native, or exotic, species get introduced by humans, whether purposefully or accidentally. -Define an “ invasive species.” -Explain how invasive species can be detrimental to biodiversity.

2 “FishZilla” The Northern Snakehead

3 Northern Snakehead in Louisiana?

4

5 What is an invasive species?

6 Native Species DEFINITION: In America, those species which have historically been here longer than the white man

7 Exotic or “Non-native” Species
DEFINITION: Species that are not in an area NATURALLY

8 How do exotic species get here?
1. Range Extension: Humans cause a change in the environment that extends the species’ natural habitat

9 "Nay, I'll have a starling shall be taught to speak nothing but 'Mortimer'..."
William Shakespeare Henry IV

10 “Not a whit, we defy augury
“Not a whit, we defy augury. There is special providence in the fall of a sparrow. If it be now, 'tis not to come; if it be not to come, it will be now; if it be not now, yet it will come—the readiness is all. Since no man, of aught he leaves, knows what is't to leave betimes, let be.” William Shakespeare Hamlet

11 How do exotic species get here?
Purposeful Introduction: Humans purposely place the species in an area a. Starlings b. Sparrows c. Honeysuckle

12 How do exotic species get here?
Accidental Introduction: Humans accidentally bring a species into an area *Zebra Mussels

13 What are invasive species?
Invasive species, non-native species, invasive exotics, are introduced usually by human activities. Invasive species are generally thought to cause economic or environmental harm. Life Sciences - HHMI Outreach. Copyright 2010 President and Fellows of Harvard College

14 Invasive Species DEFINITION: Exotic Species which cause damage and/or harm to human health. To be invasive, species must meet these four criteria . . . 1. Produce a lot of offspring 2. Grow quickly 3. Have strong defenses 4. Outcompete the native species

15 Is honeysuckle an invasive species?
Design an experiment to test this question

16 Your presentation must include…
Question/Problem Background Information/Research about the question Hypothesis Experiment (Include your control and variables) Results (Chart, Tables, Pictures) Conclusion (Include sources of error) Each section is worth 5 points!
