Spanish Florida - 1 565 - The Spanish set-up the 1st European colony in North America - St. Augustine and are in Central and South America even earlier. https://static.newworldencyclopedia.org/b/b0/Colonization_of_the_Americas_1750.PNG http://www.oregonpioneers.com/graphics/Map1650.jpg http://www.oregonpioneers.com/graphics/Map1763.jpg http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_zLYDH1KfaG8/TASMXwF9V6I/AAAAAAAAAh0/-UgKZUPSy7E/s1600/conquistador6.jpg "...the Spanish travelled all over the southern and western halves of North America looking for it. On their travels they encountered many Indian tribes who were given the opportunity to convert to Christianity or be put to death as heretics. You see, the Spanish were not just after gold, they were also in the New World to spread the Catholic faith. So, any Indian tribe which rejected the Catholic faith was either killed or forced into slavery. It was a very brutal business but the Spanish were perfectly willing to commit extreme acts of violence and even genocide in the name of religion and in their quest for gold."
