1 Intel® Education K-12 Resources www.intel.com/teachers Our aim is to promote excellence in Mathematics and how this can be used with technology in order to improve the performance of learners and also for teachers. We know that South Africa received a poor rating in both Maths and Science education, and ranks 146 out of 148 in terms of education quality (2.1 out of 7). Due to these poor learning standards, the economy of South Africa has been greatly impacted. We look to teachers as the solution. By focusing on teacher performance we aim to improve these statistics. We are going to present two types of learning

8 Intel® Education K-12 Resources www.intel.com/teachers Blended Virtual Model Remote, online learning complemented with spending time with a teacher or traditional classroom experience on an as- needed basis. Rotation Model Students rotate on a fixed schedule between learning online and learning with a teacher in a traditional classroom setup. Flex Model Students receive most of their instruction through online tools and curriculum and teachers provide on-site backup support. Self-Blend Model Students choose to take one or more courses online to supplement their traditional school’s offerings.

13 Intel® Education K-12 Resources www.intel.com/teachers Let focus on IXL as an example of adaptive learning IXL Overview ● “the world’s leading maths practice website” ● not maths lessons ● South Africa CAPS ● algorithmically generated questions that adapt to students’ skill levels ● varied question types ● over 2,000 mathematical skills covered Introduction ● Students can work at any level ● Grade 7 student can review Grade 6 maths ● requires internet connection ● not free / not open ● Students immediately are shown the correct answer with an explanation if they answer incorrectly

Our lives are increasingly complex as new technology provides almost infinite possibilities for research, entertainment, collaboration and participation in community activities.

Students receive many of their messages today through one or more digital devices. Students must be able to effectively analyze and process the different types and format of communication in their lives today. Communication and Collaboration empowers students to understand, manage, and create effective oral, written, and multimedia communication in a variety of forms and contexts demonstrate teamwork and leadership, working productively with others, adapt to varied roles and responsibilities, exercising empathy, and respecting diverse perspectives
