1
Bohr Model versus Quantum-Mechanical Model
2
Bell Ringer Where are the electrons in the Bohr Model?
Where are the electrons in the Quantum Mechanical Model? USE FULL SENTENCES (YES I AM WALKING AROUND AND CHECKING IN)
3
Draw a T-Chart Bohr Model Quantum-Mechanical Model Who
What does it tell us Strengths Weaknesses We Use It When… We Don’t Use it When…
4
Who? Niels Bohr
5
Who? Heisenberg, Schrondinger & Other People
6
What does it tell us? Bohr’s Model told us:
-there are different energy levels -it takes more energy to have an electron farther away from the nucleus than close to the nucleus -electrons orbit around the nucleus on PERMANENT PATHWAYS -if an electron moves up or down the energy Levels, it is either absorbing or giving off Energy!
7
What Does it Tell Us? The Quantum-Mechanical Model Tells Us…
-electrons DO have energy levels but do NOT move on permanent pathways (orbits) -the electron cloud is an area of PROBABLE Location of an electron -It is more MATHEMATICALLY and CHEMICALLY Truthful

Excitation of Electrons: What do Bohr’s Experiments tell us?
What was Neils Bohr’s questions about atoms? What do the colors tell us about the electrons? Why do we compare energy levels to a staircase? What is the “ground state”? How many different ways could an electron go from an excited state to the ground state?
11
So why is studying Excitation of Electrons in Important?
What are Quantum Dots? What is the different between big and small sized atoms in terms of energy and light given off? Why does MIT study electron excitation? (Think: What disease are they trying to help cure?)
