TOTEM POLE - WHAT DO WE KNOW? Brainstorm answers to the following questions: What do they look like? What do the figures on the poles represent? What are they made of? Describe a real totem pole that you have seen? Totem Poles

THE STORY OF THE TOTEM POLE Read the native myth on page 55 of the Literature and Media text During Reading : What does living in harmony with the Black Bear mean, specifically? What does living in harmony with the Blackfish mean? What is the moral lesson explicitly implied in the last paragraph.

JOURNAL RESPONSE: In a short written response or the drawing of a totem pole (follow the pattern shown in the story – human form at bottom, followed by animals, then symbols) What is your story? How have your experiences defined your identity?
