1 Overview of the Title I Program at Traphagen Elementary School Alexandra Jean, Literacy Specialist, December 10, 2014 Traphagen Elementary School

2 Purpose To provide information about our school’s Title I program. Our students are in a Title 1 school wide program. This means Title 1 money can be used to upgrade educational programs that impact every child. Every parent/guardian in our school is a Title 1 parent!

3 Title I Program What is “Title I”? –Funds to provide programs to help children who are struggling in reading and math. –Extra help (in addition to what they learn during math and reading time in the classroom). –Funding provided under No Child Left Behind. Types of Programs: –After school program (grades 3-6). –Targeted – students identified for the program based on performance on assessments.

4 Title I Funds in Our School Program Funds –Amount of Funds available for this year: $13,651. –Description of Title I Program Title I Parent Involvement Funds –Amount of funds available for this year: $856. –Host Parent Involvement Day; including workshops, refreshments and takeaways. –Parents can be involved with deciding how funds are spent by attending PTA meetings, and the Annual Title I Meeting.

5 Title I Funds in Our School How Last Years Program Funds Were Used After school program for students Grades 3-6, including resources and After School Program teacher salaries. Professional Development to enhance quality of instruction: Workshops and Conferences for Teachers. School improvement. Parent Involvement initiatives and Parent Involvement Day.

7 Curriculum Our district uses this curriculum: – ELA: CKLA (grades K-2) and ELA Modules (grades 3-6) –Math: Modules (K-6) –McGraw-Hill Networks Social Studies Program (K-6) in order to help the children achieve the State Standards. – www.engageny.org/resource/new-york-state-p-12- common-core.

8 Title I Assessments Assessments are used to help teachers determine if a student is understanding the content presented in the classroom. We use the following assessments for our students: –DIBELS (K-1) Diagnostic Tests –DIBELS Progress Monitoring (K-1) –New York State exams for ELA and Math (grades 3-6) –I-ready (grades 2-6) Diagnostic Tests –i-Ready (grades 2-6) Progress Monitoring –Module (Grades 2-6)/CKLA (K-2) mid and end of Unit tests

9 Proficiency Levels If a child does not reach a certain proficiency level when they take an assessment, we consider them for additional help from our Title I program.

10 PSSA Proficiency Levels Your child will be taking the New York State ELA and Math Assessments in grades 3-8. –Four Proficiency Levels for the 3-8 Assessments Level 4 Level 3 Level 2 Level 1 –Our goal (and the State’s goal) is for your child to reach the Level 3 “Proficiency” on the 3-8 assessments

11 Parent’s Rights under NCLB Teacher Qualifications. Right to be notified if your student is taught by a Non-Highly Qualified Teacher for four or more weeks. To request opportunities to meet regularly with staff for parent involvement. To actively participate in decisions affecting your child. Review application for Title I and make suggestions.

12 Process for Contacting Staff If you have questions or concerns relating to your child’s performance in school or other issues, please contact the school. The first point of contact should be the classroom teacher. He/she knows your child best. – Classroom Teacher – Title I Teacher – Principal – Other Specialists
