Students Students will be learning to read and write in English and in Spanish Students will be expected to complete homework in both classes Students will be expected to maintain grade level curriculum standards in English for Reading and Writing even though they are only receiving instruction half of the school week(50% of the time vs. 100% in an English only classroom) Science, Social Studies and Math will be co-taught in both languages. Ex. The same math concepts are taught and tested in both English and Spanish. Make sure your child is completing the homework Sign the reading logs Make sure your child is reading every night Help your child with sight words for both English and Spanish Check your child’s folders and Agendas. 4. English Developmental list: individually based Test: 6 words, 2 unknown words, dictated sentence with 2 spelling words; Tests are biweekly on Fri. Homework: 2 /week 8/month Study words and word patterns nightly Spanish Weekly list based on high frequency words or topic of the week (Science/Social Studies) When doing homework they can write words 5 times, ABC order, Write sentences or find the words from a magazine. Test: Weekly, the same 6 words sent. Frogs will have their test on Monday and Bees on Wednesday. Homework: 2/week and 3/week (if they have class on Fridays) 10/month

English Students are working on writing 3 to 5 sentences Capitals at beginning of sentence and special names (I) Punctuation (periods at end of ideas) Spacing Adding detail and description Inventive spelling is appropriate Eg. elephant= elefnt Spanish Students are working on writing complete sentences. Then, compound sentences which will let them write short paragraph of five sentences or more. Writing will be based on the topic of the week and an specific skill every quarter such as: narrative, observational and explaining why. They will also be able to write summaries and answer to questions.

8. Report grades are based on a progression of skills and are based on the child’s mastery of the skill Skills are ongoing and build on each other (ie. Children need to be progressing in one skill in order to begin to progress in the next skill; not all first grade skills will be indicated on the report card, however they are important for mastering the skill indicated on the report card) Grades are not equivalent to A, B, C, D M: Student can perform the skill consistently, every time, independently P: Students are progressing toward consistent and independent proficiency B: Students are beginning to progress towards the standard (may be doing it sometimes, or with guidance) N: Students are not yet progressing toward the standard, or are not demonstrating the standard; they are unable to perform
