2 Why Should I Study  To gain a better understanding of the subject  To get good grades on quizzes and test  Increase self-esteem

3 What’s Your Study Plan  Assignment  Due date  Days to work  Estimated time needed “Tasks begun well, likely have good finishes.” -Sophocles

4 Tips for Efficient Studying  Have a particular study space that is free of distractions  Pick a routine time for studying  Gather all study materials that are needed  Learn your child’s study style; visual, auditory, kinesthetic & use strategies specific to that learning style  Utilize study groups

5 Taking Notes Why??  Helps the student concentrate in class  Helps the student prepare for tests How??  Listen for key words, do not try to write everything down.  Use shorthand/abbreviations  If teacher writes something on the board, write it down.  Write down conclusions from discussions  Write down key vocabulary that may appear on a test  Listen for certain clues of important information such as “to sum up” or “the 3 causes were”  Use Heading and Sub headings to help organize and locate information more quickly

6 Communicating with Teachers  Encourage student to ask questions about test format-preparation  Encourage student to seek help/clarity at first sign of difficulty or misunderstanding  Communicate with teacher after assignment/test about ways to improve  Use technology wisely (teacher web pages, School Fusion)

7 Studying for the Test  Before the Test - Try to anticipate the questions by reviewing questions from previous homework assignments - Review notes, outline, note cards, quizzes - Look up/ask teacher about points that aren’t clear

8 Studying for the Test  During the Test - Relax - Carefully read directions & follow instructions - Review test and budget time - Check answers carefully before turning it in

9 Studying for the Test  After the Test - Read teacher comments - Carefully examine mistakes - See teacher with any questions

10 Down to Basics  Everyone can develop effective study habits  Patience is key…it takes time to develop  The benefits outweigh the time and energy it takes to develop effective study habits - Better grades - Higher standardized test scores - More educational programs/post secondary options
