1
Nervous System vs. Endocrine System
2
Nervous System & Endocrine System Nervous System: Sending messages fast but they don’t last long –Like an energy drink that gives you a quick burst of energy that doesn’t last very long. Endocrine System: Sending messages slowly but they last a long time –Like eating well, exercising and getting enough sleep will give you energy all day!
3
The Nervous System: Sends messages quickly but they don’t last long. Broken into two parts: Central Nervous System (CNS) –Brain and spinal cord Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) –Carries messages to and from CNS
4
Central nervous system Peripheral nervous system The Nervous System: It breaks down into two parts.
6
Sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions of the nervous system
7
Summary of autonomic differences Autonomic nervous system controls physiological arousal Sympathetic division (arousing) Parasympathetic division (calming) Pupils dilate EYES Pupils contract Decreases SALIVATION Increases Perspires SKIN Dries Increases RESPERATION Decreases Accelerates HEART Slows Inhibits DIGESTION Activates Secrete stress hormones ADRENAL GLANDS Decrease secretion of stress hormones
8
Endocrine System Uses hormones that travel through the bloodstream. Takes longer to get there but lasts a long time
9
The Reflex Works by bypassing the brain so you can react quicker. Sensory Neuron Interneuron Motor Neuron
