C1 ATTENTION GETTER/THESIS “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere” Segregation is unfair and needs to be eliminated in the public school system. REASONS/EVIDENCE (ETHOS, LOGOS, PATHOS) Segregation is unjust (ethos); ex: inequity of distribution of funds Students in integrated schools get along fine. (logos) ex: schools in the north Segregation is dehumanizing. (pathos)ex: feelings of inferiority CONCESSION/COUNTER ARGUMENT One may concede that many people feel that the races are supposed to be separated; however, times are changing and change is not so bad. RESTATE THESIS/CALL TO ACTION The unfairness of segregation results in injustice, while the elimination of segregation results in better understanding among the races. (antithesis) By not bringing in new perspectives, students will remain culturally and intellectually stagnant.

C2 ATTENTION GETTER/THESIS “We know through painful experience that freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.” As the oppressed, it is time to argue for the desegregation of public schools. REASONS/EVIDENCE (ETHOS, LOGOS, PATHOS) Students of segregated schools believe equality and fairness will come from integration (ethos). White students receive a better education than black students, under the “separate but equal” law. (logos) students who have to use textbooks that are out of date may care less about their education, feel unimportant; lack of motivation CONCESSION/COUNTERARGUMENT One may argue that segregated schools are the the norm; however, what may be the norm is not always what is right. RESTATE THESIS/CALL TO ACTION Desegregation of public schools is a justice that the student population demands. It is easier to accept change than to fight against it; change is for the better.

C4 ATTENTION GETTER/THESIS “Now is the time to lift our national policy from the quicksand of racial injustice to the solid rock of human dignity.” Segregation of students in public schools is inhumane and indecent REASONS/EVIDENCE (ETHOS, LOGOS, PATHOS) A student’s education should not be based on skin color.(ethos) All people are created equal; separation based on skin color violates this idea. (logos) Students feel alienated and inferior because they are currently segregated. (pathos) CONCESSION/COUNTER ARGUMENT While segregation is the norm, it is immoral; therefore, no citizen in good conscience should allow it to continue. RESTATE THESIS/CALL TO ACTION Separation of students by race aggravates the morality of individuals. Implementation of justice cannot be prolonged forever; support the equality of all races and the desegregation of schools.

C6 ATTENTION GETTER/THESIS “We have waited more than 340 years for our constitutional and God given rights.” Segregation does not have a place in public schools. REASONS/EVIDENCE (ETHOS, LOGOS, PATHOS) Race should not be a factor in how well one does in school. (ethos) Segregated schools have less financial support, which results in poor quality of education. (logos) Students who are segregated feel diminished and inferior. (pathos) CONCESSION/COUNTER ARGUMENT Segregation may reduce tension and prevent violence; however, once students acclimate to one another, they will realize they have more similarities than differences RESTATE THESIS/CALL TO ACTION Desegregation is necessary in the educational system. Now is the time to promote racial equality and diminish the idea of racial segregation

C8 ATTENTION GETTER/THESIS “There can be no gainsaying the fact that racial injustice engulfs this community” Racial injustice is a problem that can first be fixed by desegregating schools. REASONS/EVIDENCE (ETHOS, LOGOS, PATHOS) It will create more acceptance and create more educational opportunities. (ethos) It is cost effective and will eliminate racial tension in the community. (logos) To be an American is to embrace freedom and equality, therefore not upholding these principles is un- American. (pathos) CONCESSION/COUNTER ARGUMENT Yes everyone will not agree or be willing to accept the changes, but change is necessary to remove the barriers and progress. RESTATE THESIS/CALL TO ACTION Desegregating public schools is the way to end racial injustice. To begin a new era of racial equality, this current one must come to an end.
