This is the format of the English Paper for the Merged Stream. Your child will sit for 4 papers, namely, Composition, Language Use, Listening and Oral Communication.

For Paper 1, there are 2 parts to the paper. Part 1 is Situational Writing which carries 15 marks. Part 2 is Continuous Writing which carries 40 marks. The total for Paper 1 is 55 marks. The duration for this paper is 1 hour 10 mins.

There are a few changes. For Booklet A, the number of items for the Grammar component has increased to 10. Punctuation is no longer tested as a separate component. It might be tested in the new Visual Text Comprehension in Booklet B. This new component is a merger of Graphic Stimulus and Comprehension MCQ.
There are other changes in Booklet B. The number of items for Editing for Spelling and Grammar has been increased to 12. The Comprehension OE component includes varied question types with marks ranging from 1 to 4 marks per question. Marks are awarded only for content.

Next is Paper 3 which still carries 20 marks. It is still purely MCQ. It is no longer a common paper with the Foundation English Paper. The number of graphic items is increased to 7. Time will be given for candidates to read the questions before each text is heard. The options will not be read out.

Ravi walked towards the supermarket two blocks from his house. His mother had told him to buy a carton of milk. “Hmm, which one should I get?” Ravi asked himself as he looked at the rows of milk cartons. He finally made up his mind and reached out for a carton of strawberry-flavoured milk.
Next is Paper 4 which is Oral Communication. This part of the paper has 2 components. The total for this paper is 30 marks. Part 1 of the paper is Reading Aloud. Pupils are expected to read a passage aloud. He will be graded based on his accuracy and fluency. This part carries 10 marks.

19. Parental Involvement at Home
Allow your child to practise their practice papers under examination condition.
Discourage your child from using calculators while practising the easy questions.
Encourage your child to move onto the next question if they are stuck at a difficult question.
Do not provide answers to your child immediately.
Select some questions and allow your child to explain to you how he/she derives at the answers. If your child is able to explain his/her thinking process, your child truly understands.
