5 ENGLISH LANGUAGE STANDARD
Paper 1 Composition 55 m Paper 2 Language Use 95 m Paper 3 Listening 20 m Paper 4 Oral Communication 30 m This is the format of the English Paper for the Merged Stream. Your child will sit for 4 papers, namely, Composition, Language Use, Listening and Oral Communication.

6 ENGLISH LANGUAGE Paper 1 (1 hour 10 min) Part 1 Situational Writing
Continuous Writing 40 m Total 55 m For Paper 1, there are 2 parts to the paper. Part 1 is Situational Writing which carries 15 marks. Part 2 is Continuous Writing which carries 40 marks. The total for Paper 1 is 55 marks. The duration for this paper is 1 hour 10 mins.

7 Part 1: Situational Writing (15 m)
ENGLISH LANGUAGE No change Paper 1 Part 1: Situational Writing (15 m) examples: formal formal letter postcard informal informal letter message report speech note For Situational Writing, there are a few text types that might be tested, like , postcard and the others listed here.

8 Part 2 : Continuous Writing (40 m)
ENGLISH LANGUAGE NEW Format! Paper 1 Part 2 : Continuous Writing (40 m) A change from the current item type ONE topic, but with greater scope for writing from different perspectives Visuals are given to provide ideas for various perspectives Assessment is on writing skills, not on text type (diary entry, narrative, information text, etc.) There is a change for this component.

9 Language Use & Comprehension
ENGLISH LANGUAGE NEW Format ! Paper 2 Language Use & Comprehension (1 hour 50 min) BOOKLET A (MCQ) BOOKLET B Grammar 10 m Grammar Cloze Vocabulary 5 m Editing for Spelling and Grammar 12 m Vocabulary Cloze Comprehension Cloze 15 m Visual Text Comprehension 8 m Synthesis / Transformation Open-Ended 20 m There are a few changes. For Booklet A, the number of items for the Grammar component has increased to 10. Punctuation is no longer tested as a separate component. It might be tested in the new Visual Text Comprehension in Booklet B. This new component is a merger of Graphic Stimulus and Comprehension MCQ. There are other changes in Booklet B. The number of items for Editing for Spelling and Grammar has been increased to 12. The Comprehension OE component includes varied question types with marks ranging from 1 to 4 marks per question. Marks are awarded only for content.

10 Listening Comprehension (20 m)
ENGLISH LANGUAGE NEW Format ! Paper 3 Listening Comprehension (20 m) The crowd went wild! Everyone was cheering for their favourite athlete. Tom and Nick were cheering for their good friend, Rudy. It was going to be a close race. With seconds to go, Rudy’s arm shot out and touched the edge of the pool. He did it! He was the winner! 1 2 3 Next is Paper 3 which still carries 20 marks. It is still purely MCQ. It is no longer a common paper with the Foundation English Paper. The number of graphic items is increased to 7. Time will be given for candidates to read the questions before each text is heard. The options will not be read out.

11 Oral Communication (30 m) Part 1: Reading Aloud (10 m)
ENGLISH LANGUAGE No change Paper 4 Oral Communication (30 m) Part 1: Reading Aloud (10 m) Ravi walked towards the supermarket two blocks from his house. His mother had told him to buy a carton of milk. “Hmm, which one should I get?” Ravi asked himself as he looked at the rows of milk cartons. He finally made up his mind and reached out for a carton of strawberry-flavoured milk. Next is Paper 4 which is Oral Communication. This part of the paper has 2 components. The total for this paper is 30 marks. Part 1 of the paper is Reading Aloud. Pupils are expected to read a passage aloud. He will be graded based on his accuracy and fluency. This part carries 10 marks.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE NEW Format! Paper 4 Oral Communication (30 m) Part 2: Stimulus-based Conversation (20 m) This is a merging of Picture Discussion and Conversation The next part is Stimulus-based Conversation. This is a merging of Picture Discussion and Conversation. The themes in the topics under this section will be broadly linked to those in the Reading Aloud section.

14 Application & Analysis
MATHEMATICS Cognitive levels at which pupils will be assessed are broadly classified as follows: Knowledge Comprehension Application & Analysis Pupils should be able to : - recall specific mathematical facts, concepts, rules and formulae, and perform straightforward computations (Knowledge). - interpret data and use mathematical concepts, rules and formulae and solve routine or familiar mathematical problems. (Comprehension) - analyse data and/or apply mathematical concepts, rules and formulae in a complex situation, and solve unfamiliar problems. (Application & Analysis)

15 PSLE Exam Format Paper 1 comprises two booklets. The use of calculators is not allowed. Paper 2 comprises one booklet. The use of calculators is allowed.

19 Parental Involvement at Home
Allow your child to practise their practice papers under examination condition. Discourage your child from using calculators while practising the easy questions. Encourage your child to move onto the next question if they are stuck at a difficult question. Do not provide answers to your child immediately. Select some questions and allow your child to explain to you how he/she derives at the answers. If your child is able to explain his/her thinking process, your child truly understands.

SCIENCE Mark allocation for Section B Pupils have to show understanding of concepts and correct application to attain full marks. Case 1: “Mere mentioning of key words with wrong concept or understanding will not be awarded with marks.” Case 2: “Correct application of principles with right concept, even with no mention of key words, can be awarded with the full marks.”
