Introduction to Animals Chapter 4 7th Grade Life Science Mrs. Howard’s Class
2
Taxonomy and Classification
3
Binomial Nomenclature classification system in which each species is assigned a two-part scientific name consisting of the Genus and species Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus species (King Phillip Came Over For Good Spaghetti) Taxonomy for humans would be: Animalia, Chordata, Mammalia, Primatae, Hominidae, Homo sapiens
4
Heterotrophic Eukaryotic multicellular lack cell walls >95% = invertebrates (do not have backbone) <5% = vertebrates (have a backbone) Characteristics of Animals
5
Invertebrates and Vertebrates Flatworms - Platyhelminthes Roundworms - Nematoda Segmented worms - Annelida
6
Animal Functions 1.Obtaining Food 2.Obtaining Oxygen 3.Maintaining Homeostasis 4.Movement (most animals) 5.Reproduction
7
Animal Functions Obtaining Food Carnivore (Eats animals) Herbivore (Eats plants) Omnivore (Eats both) Detritivore (Eats dead or decaying matter)
8
Animal Functions Obtaining Oxygen (Respiration) Take in O2 and give off CO2 Using lungs, gills or through skin (diffusion)
9
Animal Functions Maintaining Homeostasis Circulation/ Temperature regulation Very small animals rely on diffusion Larger animals have circulatory system
10
Animal Functions Movement: How they move can vary (swim, crawl, fly, run, slither) *Some animals don’t move at all!
11
Animal Functions Reproduction: Most reproduce sexually = genetic diversity Many invertebrates can also reproduce asexually
12
What are the five functions of living systems? 1.___________________ 2.___________________ 3.___________________ 4.___________________ 5.___________________
