3
Main Idea/Vocabulary coordinate plane origin x-axis y-axis Use ordered pairs to locate points and organize data. ordered pair x-coordinate y-coordinate graph
4
Example 1 Naming Points Using Ordered Pairs Write the ordered pair that names point S. Step 1Start at the origin. Move right along the x-axis until you are under point S. The x-coordinate of the ordered pair is 1. Answer: Point S is named by the ordered pair (1, 2). Step 2Now move up until you reach point S. The y-coordinate is 2.

1.A 2.B 3.C 4.D Example 1 A.(2, 3) B.(3, 2) C.(2, 2) D.(3, 3) Write the ordered pair that names point E.
6
Example 2 Graphing Ordered Pairs Graph the point T(2, 2). Start at the origin. Move 2 units to the right on the x-axis. Answer: Then move 2 units up to locate the point. Draw a dot and label the dot T.

8
Example 3 The value is halfway between 1 and 2. So, on the x-axis, move to the right halfway between 1 and 2. Graphing Ordered Pairs Start at the origin. Answer: Move 0 units up on the y-axis. Draw a dot and label the dot U. Graph the point
9
1.A 2.B 3.C 4.D Example 3 A.B. C.D. Graph the point
10
Example 4 Graphing Ordered Pairs Graph the point V(0.5, 1). Start at the origin. The value 0.5 is halfway between 0 and 1. So, on the x-axis, move halfway between 0 and 1. Answer: Then move 1 unit up to locate the point. Draw a dot and label the dot V.

Example 5 List Data as Ordered Pairs PETS Amelia feeds her dog, Buster, 2 cups of food each day. Amelia made this table to show how much food Buster eats for 1, 2, 3, and 4 days. List this information as ordered pairs (days, food). Answer: The ordered pairs are (1, 2), (2, 4), (3, 6), and (4, 8). Animation: Ordered Pairs and Functions

The table shows the number of guests he can invite if he sets up 1, 2, 3, and 4 tables. List this information as ordered pairs (tables, guests).
14
Example 6 Graph Data Using Ordered Pairs PETS Amelia feeds her dog, Buster, 2 cups of food each day. Amelia made this table to show how much food Buster eats for 1, 2, 3, and 4 days. Graph the ordered pairs (days, food). Then describe the graph. Answer:The points appear to fall on a line.

1.A 2.B 3.C 4.D Example 6 TABLES Jordan is planning to have a party. The table shows the number of guests he can invite if he sets up 1, 2, 3, and 4 tables. Graph the ordered pairs (tables, guests). Then describe the graph. A.B. C.D. The points do not appear to fall on a line. The points appear to fall on a line. The points do not appear to fall on a line.
