ISTE Workshop Pedagogy for Effective Use of ICT in Engineering Education IIT Bombay January 2015

Lab - Find a suitable video and visualization for your course

How to perform this lab Form groups of 2-3 with participants in your domain / subject. All info, instructions and activities in this lab are provided in this ppt file. Go through the slides one by one. Slides with a white background and black text (like this one) contain information or instructions. Slides with a yellow background contain activities that you need to perform. On some yellow slides, you will see blue text where you need to write answers. After you complete all activities, rename this file as: toolslab-name1-name2-name3, where name1, name2 etc are names of participants in your group. Upload this file as the Moodle assignment.

What you did so far In the previous session you learnt about different types of technology tools to address objectives and learning activities at different cognitive levels Now you will apply these results and find tools that you can teach with in your class. Hence choose a course or subject that you will teach in the coming semester.

What you will do in this lab The main goal of this lab is to help you find technology tools for different cognitive levels that you can use in your course. The next few slides guide you in searching the web, exploring technologies and identifying examples that you can use in your course. First, choose a course or subject that you will teach in the coming semester.

Technology 1 - Video Goal: Search the web and find a video of a teacher explaining a topic in your course. First look into open educational resources that contains videos on different topics, such as: NPTEL, MIT-OCW, YouTube channels … You can locate the website of the above repositories using a Google search.

Technology I – Video Q1. For which subject are you trying to find a video? A. ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING I- 6 th Sem Civil Engineering Q2. For which topic in the above subject are you trying to find a video? A. Treatment methods of Water. This topic includes characteristics of water, different treatment units, supply of treated water to the consumers Q3. Which repositories or websites did you search? List their names and URLs in the table below. Add more rows if needed. Name of repository or websiteURL 1. www.youtube.comwww.youtube.com/watch?v=lOLZUk13csAwww.youtube.com/watch?v=lOLZUk13csA, www.youtube.com/watch?v=9z14l51ISwg 2. www.coursera.orghttps://www.coursera.org/course/hwts

Technology I – Video Q4. Write the URL of the video you chose. www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOLZUk13csA Q5. Write one learning objective for which you will use the video. Students will be able to describe the methods and the different units that are employed in the treatment of water Q6. What is the cognitive level of the learning objective. Remembering and Understanding Levels

Technology 2 - Visualization Goal: Search the web and find a visualization such as an animation or simulation for a topic in your course. Searach in open educational resources that contains visualizations on different topics, such as: OSCAR, PhET, MERLOT, MIT-TEAL You can locate the website of the above using a Google search. Each repository allows you to browse or search for specific visualizations.

Technology 2 – Visualization Q1. For which subject are you trying to find a visualization ? A. ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING I- 6 th Sem Civil Engineering Q2. For which topic in the above subject are you trying to find a visualization ? A. Treatment methods of Water. This topic includes characteristics of water, different treatment units, supply of treated water to the consumers Q3. Which repositories or websites did you search? List their names and URLs in the table below. Add more rows if needed. Name of repository or websiteURL 1. www.phet.colorado.eduhttps://phet.colorado.edu/en/contributions/view/3 183https://phet.colorado.edu/en/contributions/view/3 183, https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/ph- scale-basics 2.http://www.merlot.org/merlot/viewMaterial.htm?id=840 51&hitlist=materialType%3DAnimation%26sort.property %3DoverallRating http://www.sumanasinc.com/webcontent/animati ons/biology.html

Technology 2 – Visualization Q4. Write the URL of the visualization you chose. https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/ph-scale-basics Q5. Write one learning objective for which you will use the visualization. Students will be able to write the importance of pH parameter in the treatment of water. Q6. What is the cognitive level of the learning objective Remembering and Understanding level and may to some extent Apply level

Technology 3 - Wiki Goal: Explore the Wiki**

Technology 3 – Wiki Q1. What are the different units employed in the biological treatment of water? http://www.iwawaterwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Articles/CoagulationandFlocculationinWaterandWastewaterTreatment A. Coagulation and flocculation are an essential part of drinking water treatment as well as wastewater treatment. This article provides an overview of the processes and looks at the latest thinking. Material for this article was largely taken from reference (1).flocculationwastewater Coagulation and flocculation are essential processes in various disciplines. In potable water treatment, clarification of water using coagulating agents has been practiced from ancient times. As early as 2000 BC the Egyptians used almonds smeared around vessels to clarify river water. The use of alum as a coagulant by the Romans was mentioned in around 77 AD. By 1757, alum was being used for coagulation in municipal water treatment in England.flocculation In modern water treatment, coagulation and flocculation are still essential components of the overall suite of treatment processes – understandably, because since 1989 the regulatory limit in the US for treated water turbidity has progressively reduced from 1.0 NTU in 1989 to 0.3 NTU today. Many water utilities are committed to consistently producing treated water turbidities of less than 0.1 NTU to guard against pathogen contamination.flocculation Coagulation is also important in several wastewater treatment operations. A common example is chemical phosphorus removal and another, in overloaded wastewater treatment plants, is the practice of chemically enhancing primary treatment to reduce suspended solids and organic loads from primary clarifiers..wastewater
