4 WSU vision: WSU will be one of the nation’s leading land-grant universities, preeminent in research and discovery, teaching, and engagement WSU mission: To advance knowledge through creative research, innovation, and creativity... To extend knowledge through innovative educational programs… To apply knowledge through local and global engagement that will improve the quality of life and enhance the economy of the state, nation, and world… Theme 1 of WSU Strategic Plan: “Exceptional Research, Innovation, and Creativity”

5 Examples of active research areas- WSU Pullman
“Smart-Grid” and “Smart City” – improved reliability Matter at extreme conditions of pressure and temperature Advanced food processing- shelf stable foods Education- measurement and evaluation techniques

6 Sample research projects:
Paul G. Allen School for Global Animal Health (SGAH) provides innovative solutions to global infectious disease challenges Sample research projects: Antimicrobial resistance in Tanzania Human malaria and East Coast fever Global Animal Health info: The Paul G. Allen Center for Global Animal Health is a state-of-the-art biomedical research facility on the Pullman campus that is linked to our partners across the globe. The Allen Center was designed and constructed to LEED standards-designed to minimize energy and water use and harmonize with the beauty of the Palouse and the WSU campus. The lobby invites the public to learn about the mission of the School and the glass walls in the research wing provide both natural light to the laboratory and allow visitors to see ongoing work. Three conference rooms provide spaces for learning on-site and for connecting across the globe while open spaces encourage direct interaction among the students, faculty, and staff.   - Gates provided a $25M grant for the facility, Paul Allen provided a $26M gift for the programmatic/operational functions of the SGAH.

7 Examples of active research areas- urban campuses
Bioproducts, Sciences and Engineering Lab ( WSU Tri-Cities/PNNL) Sleep Performance Research Center (WSU Spokane) Mt. St. Helens disturbance ecology (WSU Vancouver)
