New Boundaries: Island Park Elementary Balance Enrollment Follow Major Roads

Intra-District Student Transfers  Students generally expected to go to neighborhood school starting fall 2016  New policy 3131 to address student transfer requests  Requests for transfer will be considered during open enrollment each April  Transfers will depend on available space at requested school and grade level  Priority in April 2016 (transfers for 2016-17) will be given to fifth- grade students requesting a transfer back to their fourth-grade school

Close the Gap and Bridge the Future “Bridge 2015”  MISD sits in midrange of OSPI funding:  Seattle SD: $11,085  Bellevue SD: $9,428  Mercer Island SD: $9,218  Contributions make a difference:  Seattle SD: $586 per student  Bellevue SD: $1,165 per student  Mercer Island SD: $1,233 per student

World Languages  The district is studying the feasibility of introducing a targeted world language program to our elementary schools for fall 2016.  Nationally about 25% of elementary schools have some form of world language instruction. Research shows that early childhood is an optimal time to learn a second language.  Adding an elementary world language program is subject to finding adequate resources, including capable certified instructors.  Early May, district teachers and administrators will join me in examining and exploring the elementary world language program at the Annie Wright Academy in Tacoma. They have added a targeted world language in their elementary program in a manner similar to what we are exploring.  You can read more about our progress on the district’s website.

Recommended Adoption: Mondo Bookshop Common Core  Fred Rundle and the Elementary Team recommended Mondo Bookshop Common Core for grades 3-5.  This represents a continuum of pedagogical consistency for grades K-5.  Wired for Reading will be used for Tiers I and II.  Special Education (Tier III) uses whatever materials are needed such as: multisensory like Orton Gillingham and Slingerland; Readwell; Read Naturally and others.  1.0 FTE K-2 Literacy Coach and an additional 1.0 FTE Grades 3-5 Literacy Coach are planned.

Questions? Comments?  District website has updates on these topics and more.  Please explore Popular Links and Latest Headlines on the opening page of our website, and other updates under Superintendent Services.
