JOSE ANTONIO VARGAS Jose Antonio Vargas was born in the Philippines and came to America when he was twelve years old. He did not discover his undocumented status until he applied for a driver’s license, and kept his undocumented status secret for many years. He began studying journalism in high school, and is now a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist (for his coverage of the VA Tech shootings). He created the film Documented to raise awareness about the plight of undocumented Americans, and to rally public support for the DREAM Act. After ‘outing’ himself as an undocumented American, he was arrested in July 2014, then released after questioning.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS If you could have lunch with Jose Antonio Vargas, what would you ask him? What would you want to know about his life and experience? Did watching this film change the way that you feel about undocumented Americans? Were you surprised to learn that Vargas was from the Philippines? Do you think this film will change your behavior, knowing that students and others around you face the dangers of being undocumented every day? What was the most interesting or moving part of the film? Would you recommend this film to others? Why or why not?
