9 Types of Conflict

10 External Conflict There are three types of external conflict:  character vs. character (man vs. man)  character vs. society (man vs. society)  character vs. nature (man vs. nature)

11 Character vs. Character The protagonist in the story experiences conflict with others, especially the antagonist.

12 Character vs. Society The protagonist in the story experiences conflict with society as a whole.

13 Character vs. Nature The protagonist in the story experiences conflict with the elements of nature.

14 Internal Conflict The protagonist in the story experiences conflict with her or his conscience.

15 What types of conflict presents itself in the text? With a partner, identify different instances of each conflict in the text. Then, choose one conflict to focus on, identifying 3 pieces of evidence exhibiting the conflict.

16 Writing Prompt Identify literary external conflict within the text. Use 3 pieces of evidence to support your conflict.

17 Conflict is often the thing that drives the plot of a piece of literature. In Achebe’s case, his novel, Things Fall Apart, incorporates the conflict of man vs. nature to hint at the culture and tradition valued within the community. Man vs. nature is first seen with Unoka, the father of the main character, Okonkwo, when he has issues with his crops. Man, being Unoka, and the yams’ inabilities to grow hint at the idea that success is not possible for Unoka without sacrifice. His struggle with the natural issue of growing crops leads to the bigger issue of accountability. Because Unoka is not respecting nature, he is not successful. Another instance in which readers see man vs. nature is with the people of Umoufia and the drought. During this time, people are not able to sharecrop because of the lack of resources necessary…

20 What is tradition? What is Culture? Chalk Talk the following questions: 10 minutes to silently walk around and comment on each question. 1. What is tradition? 2. What is culture? 3. How do cultural values vary? How do values differ across time and cultures? 4. What role should tradition and ritual play in a community? 5. Is it possible for two cultures to peacefully co-exist?

22 Discussion Discussion with your table : Silently take 10 minutes to prepare for a discussion. You should have evidence to support each of these questions. How does Achebe illustrate the African culture? What stereotypes do you think he is trying to erase? What stereotypes do you think he validates?

24 Thursday, December 18 th, 2014 SSR Chapter 13 of “Things Fall Apart”

25 Extra Credit With a group of 2 to 4 people, you will reenact and videotape an important scene from Things Fall Apart. Afterwards, your group will engage in a discussion about why this scene is significant to Achebe’s purpose in writing Things Fall Apart. You should also identify the purpose of the scene. Video must be emailed to your teacher by Friday, January 2 nd, 2015 EOD. Video should be no longer than 8 minutes
