Project Summary STEEEP project aims at providing 630 cross-sector SMEs with tailored training and guidance on effective energy management tools and practices targeted towards specific national or regional needs to reduce their energy consumption (10/15%) CCI advisors have exchanged their experience through comprehensive training and regular cross- border learning network meetings. They support SMEs via workshops, bilateral coaching and help desks De Montfort University is evaluating the potential for energy savings, setting efficiency targets and defining a benchmark of SME energy performance Pilot projects will be implemented in 2015 in eight different countries across Europe, setting up Local Energy Communities, shifting energy management from an individual approach to a collective one. 1 March 2014 – 28 February 2014 14 partners from 11 EU countries Involvement of 35 Chambers of Commerce and Industry (CCIs) Budget: 2.7M€ in 36 Months

Background SMEs’ Energy Efficiency (EE) potential is still under-developed (10-20%) Main barriers restricting SMEs’ investments in Energy Efficiency: Lack of financial resources Lack of information Lack of time Limited technical knowledge Difficulties to access existing financing mechanisms The action will: Improve SMEs’ know-how on Energy Efficiency Reduce SMEs’ environmental impact and dependency on fossil fuels Provide a clear response to the increasing energy prices Foster SMEs’ competitiveness Support the implementation of the Energy Efficiency Directive Trigger a collective approach to Energy Efficiency

4. Objectives 1. Build or extend capacities in participating CCIs 2. Achieve significant energy efficiency gains within participating companies 3. Define a European benchmark of SMEs energy performance 4. Establish Local Energy Communities

Main steps Two multilateral trainings for 30 CCIs advisors (Vienna, 04/2014, Berlin, 06/2014) Establishment of a Transnational Learning Network Two Transnational Learning Network meetings (Timisoara, 10/2014, Zadar, 05/2015) 1. Capacity Building Involvement of 600 SMEs which are benefitting from: Individual company visits and helpdesk support Participation in thematic workshops (energy management tools, financial incentives, technical equipment..) 2. SMEs achieving energy savings Definition of an initial benchmark of SMEs energy performance via an initial survey 3. Benchmark Definition of the framework condition for the involvement of additional SMEs and creation of 8 Local Energy Communities 4. Local Energy Communities

6. What’s next? Additional Transnational Learning Network meetings in France and Hungary to exchange expertise on SMEs support 1. Capacity Building Implementation of energy efficiency measures outlined in the Energy Management Plans Organisation of additional thematic workshops Share of experience among SMEs (energy clubs) Bi-monthly report by SMEs of their energy use data 2. SMEs achieving energy savings Review of an initial benchmark of SMEs energy performance based on the bi-monthly survey on energy use 3. Benchmark Definition of Local Action Plans and regular meetings within the Communities to implement collective energy efficiency actions 4. Local Energy Communities

Expected impact and results 600 revised or newly implemented Energy Management Plans leading to 10-15% of energy savings for 600 SMEs involved Increased awareness on funding opportunities triggering energy efficiency measures Extended EU network of at least 30 trained CCI advisors with deepened knowledge of energy management tools and practices and their implementation in SMEs 8 Local Energy Community Action Plans elaborated and implemented and definition of framework conditions for the establishment of 8 intercompany smart grids. A European benchmark of energy performance with a final report on SMEs Energy Efficiency performance and best practices.
