LEADERS Archbishop Makarios III 1 st president of the Republic of Cyprus Started a political movement for the independence of Cyprus from British Ruling Asked for assistance from Colonel George Grivas Leader of the political wing of EOKA Colonel George Grivas: Nationalistic Believed in independence Military leader of EOKA Needed an organization to accomplish goal: EOKA

STRUCTURE George Grivas: Main Military Leader Grigoris Afxentiou: Second in command Recruited more influential youth than adults 250 openly active members 1000 support members Many of the support members had other full-time jobs This was just a part-time job

POWER STRUGGLE Grivas wanted the world to know about the organization and their goals Makarios believed in a more peaceful way to accomplish his goal Grivas and Makarios disagreed on many strategies Makarios eventually lost control of the terrorist group resulting in Grivas becoming the main leader

CONCLUSION Makarios III Political Leader of EOKA Grivas: Military Leader of EOKA 1250 members 250 active operations members 1000 underground support members After Makarios lost control of the organization, leadership was stable as Grivas becoming the main leader
