A look into what EVERYTHING is made of!
Matter Matters A look into what EVERYTHING is made of!
2
Meanings Matter - Anything that has mass and takes up space
Mass - the amount of matter an object has
3
Mass vs. Weight Weight Mass - the amount of matter in an object
- use balances to measure - measure in grams/kilograms - not dependent on size; dependent on matter (density) - remains constant (same on Earth as Moon) doesn't depend on surroundings EX. bowling ball and soccer ball (same size; bowling ball has more mass) Weight - the force of gravity acting on an object - use scales to measure - measure in Newtons/pounds and ounces - CAN change with location - More gravity = More weight EX. bowling ball on Earth weighs more than on the Moon (more gravity on Earth than Moon)

The Three States of Matter
SOLIDS * particles packed together tightly * vibrate in place * does not take the shape of container LIQUIDS * particles packed loosely together * particles slip and slide past one another * takes the shape of its container GASES * particles are far apart from each other * particles move quickly * takes the shape of its container
