2 The widely held belief in the mid 1800’s that it was the destiny of the U.S. to expand west across North America to the Pacific Ocean. This belief encouraged American settlers westward, confident that they were justified in doing whatever was necessary to spread the “superior” American way of life. Expansion was considered part of “God’s plan” for America’s future. Manifest Destiny Definition
