2. SUMMARY: WHY ARE WE REVIEWING THIS AGAIN? What is a summary? A summary is a brief statement that provides the key details and main idea of a text. (A summary should NOT have every detail!) What is a Main Idea? A main idea is the controlling idea of a text. (you can also think of it as the main focus of a text) What is the difference? A main idea is usually a one sentence statement that focuses on the single focus of the passage. A summary contains the main idea but also important supporting details.

3. SCORING A SUMMARY 1234 Information Significant information is irrelevant or missing. Main idea unclear. Reread passage for main idea. Information is loosely related to main idea. Scan passage for more supporting information. The main idea is clearly stated and supported in the summary. Some relevant details may be absent. All the relevant parts of the main idea are stated clearly in the summary. Clarity Information is unclear or hard to understand due to errors. Information is sometimes unclear or mechanical errors impair the reader. Information is clear and sentences have few mechanical errors. All information is easily understood and sentences are free of errors.
