Signal words with examples For example, ………………………………………….. For instance, …………………………………………... English language can connect you with the outside world. For example, …………………………………… …………………………………..such as …………………………………………… I like tropical fruit such as mango, pineapple, and kiwi.

New lesson: Sentence Structure It rained. I went to the university. I study very hard. Independent clause

……….because it rained. I went to the university although…….. I study very hard because……….. Dependent Clause (not a complete sentence) I did not go because it rained. I went to the university although I was sick. I study very hard because I want to succeed.

Subordinate Conjunctions Reason: because I study hard because I want to succeed. Time: before, when, after, while I will phone you when I arrive. Contrast: although I went to the university although I am sick. Condition: if I will buy you a present if you get good marks.

Be careful, we have to know the difference between a preposition and Subordinate conjunction Compare: a.I suffered a lot after my accident. b.I suffered a lot after I had an accident. preposition subordinate conj. Noun only verb subject

Compare: a.I suffered a lot because of my accident. b.I suffered a lot because I had an accident. preposition subordinate conj.

The place of the dependent clause In the middle: Sara always gets A’s because she studies hard. At the beginning: Because Sara studies hard, she always gets A’s.

Another example: In the middle: We went home after the party ended. At the beginning: After the part ended, we went home.
