2 The Holocaust This lesson will be presented to a ninth grade class that will be required to read Anne Frank.

3 Objectives To have students read Anne Frank and discuss the horrors she went through because of intolerance.

4 Objectives Through reading Anne Frank, have students develop an understanding of why ethnic tolerance is necessary.

5 Materials Journal Copy of Anne Frank novel Computer with internet access Overhead projector Novel of choice Transportation for trip

7 Websites Cybrary of the Holocaust http://remember.org *This website offers many facts and archives about The Holocaust. The site is divided into a research Area and a forum area.

11 Activities In addition to reading Anne Frank, students will be required to select another Holocaust novel from a list I will provide. The student will then compare the two experiences.

13 Activities Students will visit a multicultural center and write a reflection of their experience.

14 Activities Students will be required to keep a journal. Three times a week they will write about their reading and try to make a connection to real-life.

15 Examples of Journal Topics Explain a time when you have felt discriminated against. Explain how reading Anne Frank makes you feel. What would you have done if you were Anne Frank?

16 More Journal Topics What are some examples of intolerance in current news? What are some ways that we can prevent intolerance?

17 Activities Students will be given days in the computer lab to visit appropriate internet sites. In groups, they will pick a topic to research and present to the class.

18 Topics to Research Students will choose to do their research from one of several different viewpoint. Viewpoint: *Victims, bystanders, resisters, rescuers, liberators, survivors, and children.

19 Activities Students will be required once a week to bring in topics in current news that deals with ethnic intolerance. The students will then have a discussion over topics.
