1 Gauges and well logging
Basic Safety Requirements Day 6 – Lecture 4

2 Objectives To give an understanding of the way design features, safety and warning systems, maintenance and safe working procedures contribute to the restriction of exposure Lecture notes: Instructions for the lecturer/trainer

3 Content Design features Safety and warning systems
Equipment maintenance Leak testing of sources Security and storage of portable equipment Safe working procedures Source handling Supervised area (i) any area or place external to the radiation source room being assessed, and (ii) able to be accessed by members of the public or persons who are occupationally exposed but who are not involved in carrying out a radiation practice for the possession licensee at the premises. Controlled are a (i) any area or place within the premises but outside of the radiation source room being assessed, and (ii) normally only occupied by occupationally exposed persons involved in carrying out a radiation practice for the possession licensee at the premises. ‘Type 3 area’ is any area, within the radiation source room being assessed, that is protected by fixed or movable protective barriers or screens (e.g. operator consoles). Instructions for the lecturer/trainer

4 Design Features Design features include:
shielding provided by the source housing source shutter features to prevent access

5 Source housing

6 Source shutter Rotating or sliding metal device to shield primary beam when not in use may be manually or electrically operated

7 Prevention of access Prevention of access can be achieved by:
physical barriers shielded panels close positioning of source housing and detector interlocked access gates

8 Prevention of access Physical barriers

9 Prevention of access Shielded panels

10 Prevention of access shielded panels

11 Prevention of access Positioning of source and detector

12 Prevention of access Positioning of source and detector

13 Safety and warning systems
Safety and warning systems include: shutter condition warning lights signs and notices A conspicuous radiation warning sign must be displayed adjacent to the industrial radiation gauge. This sign must be: (a) made of material resistant to weather, dust and fumes likely to be present; and (b) clean, intact and in a legible condition; and (c) securely attached This sign must contain the following information: • radiation warning symbol (trefoil) • the word ‘caution’ or ‘warning’ • words to the effect of ‘fixed radiation gauge containing radiation source’ The symbol and lettering must be black on a yellow background.

14 Shutter condition warning lights
This illuminated radiation warning sign must be connected into generator circuit in such a way that: (a) it illuminates when radiation source is in the on position (b) it does not illuminate at any other time. A radiation warning sign combined with a light is also acceptable. The illuminated warning sign or light must be fail safe (ie. turns the beam off if the sign or light fails), or adequate warning that a sign or light has failed must be indicated in a clear and unambiguous manner.

15 Signs and notices conspicuous radiation warning sign must be displayed adjacent to the industrial radiation gauge.

16 Equipment maintenance
Regular inspection and maintenance necessary to: ensure smooth operation of source shutter check general condition of gauge check legibility of warning notices check operation of any interlocks or warning lights ensure that other equipment, such as transport case, is in good condition

17 Equipment maintenance Portable gauges
Checking that source has retracted properly Cleaning of gauge and source aperture Condition of transport case

18 Equipment maintenance Fixed gauges

20 Leak testing Sealed sources should be periodically tested for leakage
Records of test should be kept Primary mechanism for restricting radiation doses is the control of access to areas where there is a potential for significant exposure. IAEA BSS defines two types of radiation areas : controlled and supervised areas. Need to classify determined by means of a prior safety assessment. Controlled areas : where specific protective measures/safety provisions required for controlling normal exposures and/or prevention or limiting the extent od any potential exposures

21 Security and storage of portable equipment
Consider security of fixed gauges Consider security and storage of: portable gauges fixed gauges used on temporary sites Primary mechanism for restricting radiation doses is the control of access to areas where there is a potential for significant exposure. IAEA BSS defines two types of radiation areas : controlled and supervised areas. Need to classify determined by means of a prior safety assessment.
