5 The challenge of increasing participation in sport by disabled people (Source Sport England 2010) Susan Booth More than 93% of disabled people don’t take part in sport 49% of young disabled people believe they miss out on sport at school 46% of the general population are involved with sports clubs, but only 12% of disabled people

8 BDSA HISTORY  Founded 1998 by a diverse group, unified by an aim to promote disability sport in Bolton  2008 Audit by Bolton Short Breaks Aiming High Team highlighted keen interest in sport by young disabled people, especially in school holiday periods  In response Bolton Disability Sports Association began to offer holiday sports provision to young disabled people in 2009; this has since expanded to include adults and non-disabled siblings Susan Booth

12 Links with local Bolton priorities (16 Priority Sports)  Developing disability stream within the 16 priority sports, linking with local clubs and NGB’s  Linked with 2012 Year of Sport in Bolton and interest in Sport generated through the Olympics and Paralympics and 2014 Commonwealth games  Linking with SENCO’s and PE teachers within mainstream schools. 16 KICKABOUT FOOTBALL Aim: to increase the participation of CP footballers aged 3 -16 in Bolton, so that there will be enough to play matches/run tournaments. Includes some professional development for the local coaches Will feed players into 2 local disability football teams Event at St Catherine’s Academy Sunday 26 th October 1-4pm Susan Booth
