1 Entry Task: Dr. Seuss How many of you have read Dr. Seuss books? Which ones do you remember? What are they about? What lessons can you learn from them? Write down as many as you can remember and what they’re about/what lesson they are teaching you in your journals.

3 Allegory A work with two layers of meaning, both figurative and literal.

4 Dr. Seuss & Allegory What if I told you that when you were a little kid reading Dr. Seuss, you were reading about racism and nuclear war? Dr. Seuss is famous for his use of allegory in his children’s books, which makes them seem more like books made for adults.

13 Star Belly Sneetches= Nazis Plain belly Sneetches= Jewish -OR- Star Belly Sneetches= Caucasian Plain Belly Sneetches= Minorities It provides the message that race and ethnicity need not be dividing lines in our society, and that we can coexist peacefully, regardless of our external differences.

14 Horton Hears A Who is an allegory for Hiroshima and the U.S. Occupation in Japan. Dr. Seuss wrote this book as an apology for his extremely racist, anti- Japanese propaganda (political cartoons) that he created during WWII.

18 Allegory Who-Ville= Japan (Hiroshima) The Whos= Japanese Horton= USA (Seuss’ idea of fictional America who would help Hiroshima rebuild after being bombed) Dropping clover that Who-ville stands upon from a far height, destroying much of the town/burning in hot oil= dropping the atomic bomb

19 Discuss: What is an allegory? Give me a definition. What is satire? Give an example from Dr. Seuss. Give one example of an allegory in Dr. Seuss and explain how it fits the definition of an allegory in detail. Based on your understanding of allegory, describe how Animal Farm is an allegory. Which characters in Animal Farm stand for characters in history? Look back at your notes and discuss!
