Germany’s anger over World War I reparations opened the door for Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party. Hitler conquered three countries before France and Britain finally declared war. The U.S. followed a policy of isolationism and refused to get involved.

Section 2: The United States at War The United States joined the war after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in late The U.S. joined the Allies, while Italy, Japan, and Germany formed the Axis Powers. The Axis Powers seemed unstoppable, but they gradually lost ground.
