Similar Triangles & Slope

43210 In addition to level 3.0 and beyond what was taught in class, the student may:  Make connection with other concepts in math.  Make connection with other content areas. The student will demonstrate and explain the connections between proportional relationships, lines, and linear equations and use functions to model relationships between quantities. The student will demonstrate and identify proportional relationships, lines, and linear equations and use functions to model quantities. With help from the teacher, the student has partial success with level 2 and 3 elements. Even with help, students have no success with level 2 and 3 content. Focus 7 - Learning Goal #1: The student will understand the connections between proportional relationships, lines, and linear equations and use functions to model relationships between quantities.

Describe the picture. How do you think the picture is related to slope? What would make it easier to determine the slope?

Slope is the steepness of a line that can be expressed as a number. In order to determine the slope, it is necessary to have a grid and to have measurements.

Slope Activity With a partner, you will work through the slope activity. You will have 8 minutes to complete the activity. Be prepared to share with the class what you have learned.

Slope Activity Discussion What are the characteristics of congruent figures? What are the characteristics of similar figures? How does slope relate to the triangles you drew? Copy this: vertical side length = change in y = slope horizontal side length change in x

Slide or Ski? You will work on this portion of the activity with your partner. The younger person will examine the picture of the slide. The older person will examine the picture of the ski slope. Follow the directions on the activity sheet labeling the pictures and answering the questions. Be prepared to share. You will have 9 minutes to complete this part of the activity.

Slide or Ski? What did you learn about the slopes for the slide and the ski slope? What did you learn about the triangles that you created? What is the relationship between slope and similar triangles?

Slope Activity Part 3 Work independently on the 3 rd activity.
