1989 Hungary had been facing severe economic, political, social and international problems, and Hungarians demanded changes in their government

1989 Freedom of expression, free elections, trade unions, and freedom of press A better economy and living standards: poverty, food shortages and inflation overwhelmed the people The removal of the Soviet troops. The Soviet military control had only increased since the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. The withdrawal from the Warsaw Pact. Many wanted to join NATO instead.

1991 József Antall First democratically elected Prime Minister in Hungary after fall of Communism Teacher, librarian, historian and political figure Played an active role in the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, and was barred from teaching and publishing until 1963 Member of several parties, such as: the Independent Smallholders’ Party and the Hungarian Democratic Forum Main goal: create a democratic state
