5 Copyright © Allyn & Bacon 2003 Nathan Ackerman Published the first article on family functioning in 1937. Was trained as a child psychiatrist. Saw family problems as rooted in conflict. Founded the famed Ackerman Family Institute in 1960.

6 Copyright © Allyn & Bacon 2003 Haley & Jackson Were a part of the Palo Alto group that discovered family therapy in the process of studying schizophrenia. Jackson’s family homeostasis defined families as units that resist change–an idea that captured family therapy for thirty years. Haley conceptualized all behavior, even symptomology, as “normal” given its context.
