7 th Grade CORE/KARES for 2/25, 3/25 and 4/8 Operations with Integers Our focus will be reviewing adding, multiplying and dividing with integers. In three meetings, we do not have time to cover subtracting integers which some of you might be wondering about, but it is a challenge to address why subtracting a negative results in a positive. You may use your own lessons to facilitate the above standards or can use the provided lessons. There is a total of six handouts, two for each of the following days 2/25, 3/25 and 4/8. Have those printed and ready prior to the CORE KARES Days. Answers are provided should you need to reference them. Justification for the reteach and reading handouts: On a day to day basis, students want to know “what are we doing” without reading the agenda. On any given day and problem, students say, “What do we do?” Students are not reading as much as they should. These particular handouts can only be done through reading. All steps are provided if they read. Students must get into the habit of reading all the way through each set of directions. Too often I find students have an incorrect answer because they did not read the final step such as “round your answer” etc. We are hoping with these handouts students will read to the end.

7 th grade core classes 2014-15 2/25- Review ADDING INTEGERS (main point you can not add items that are not the same – adding different signs means SUBTRACT) Each student will need each of the following handouts. Worksheet 1, Reteach Worksheet 2, Reading Students will READ the directions and follow the procedures to complete both handouts. As students are reading and completing the handouts, walk around with the answer key and give them feedback such as correct or incorrect. *Students who complete both handouts with accuracy qualify for PBIS points. Team to determine the amount of points given by CORE teacher. _______________________________________________________ **BONUS- Students can create a poster to display around the school. The poster must be submitted to their math teacher to qualify for the bonus. The poster must include the correct steps for adding integers with different signs. COMMON MISCONCEPTION: Students see the addition symbol so they automatically add which is NOT the case.

7 th grade core classes 2014-15 3/25-Review MULTIPLYING AND DIVIDING INTEGERS (main point multiplying and dividing have the same rules- same signs positive answer, different signs negative answer) Each student will need each of the following handouts. 7 th grade core classes 2014-15 4/8-Review INTEGERS Adding different signs means SUBTRACT multiplying and dividing problems that have the same signs (even amount of signs ) will result in positive answer. Problems that have different signs (odd amount of signs) will result in a negative answer). Each student will need the following handouts. Putting Integers into Practice Pizzazz E64 Integers Students will READ the directions and follow the procedures to complete handout. Students can use previous handouts as a tool. As students are reading and completing the handout, walk around with the answer key and give them feedback such as correct or incorrect. *Students who complete the handouts with accuracy qualify for PBIS points. Team to determine the amount of points given by CORE teacher. ____________________________________________________ COMMON MISCONCEPTION- Students see the addition symbol so they automatically add which is NOT the case. Name___________________Core Teacher___________________Math Teacher__________________ Putting Integers into Practice Use your handouts from the two previous CORE/KARES Classes to help you answer the following questions. Think about using counters and/or number lines or the labs to help you answer the questions. 1.Is the sum positive or negative and why? What is the sum to the following expression? 6 + (-12) Explanation ______________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ 2.Is the sum positive or negative and why? What is the sum to the following expression? Explanation ______________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ 3.Philip played 4 rounds of golf in a tournament. If his score for each round was -2, what was his total score for the tournament? Show work. 4.Which of the following number sentences is represented on the number line shown below? Why? 5.Is the quotient positive or negative and why? What is the quotient? Explanation _________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ 6. Is the product positive or negative and why? What is the value of the expression? Explanation _________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ 7. Complete the Pizzazz handout if you finish all questions above.
