TOPIC: Methods of Separating Mixtures Essential Question: What are the different ways of separating mixture? This ppt introduces and reviews ways of separating mixtures Chemistry

What are the ways of separating Mixture? a.) Filtration b.) Centrifuge c.) Decanting d.) Chromatography e.) Distillation f.) Density Physical means are those that do not change the nature of the substances being separated.
3
Ex. Coffee grounds are separated by water through filtration
Filtration can be used to separate an insoluble substance from a soluble substance Ex. Coffee grounds are separated by water through filtration Here you can introduce the terms Filtrate and residue.
5
This shows an example of filtration in providing clean drinking water.
6
Another view of drinking water filtration
8
Centrifuge A centrifuge is a tool used to separate matter of different densities. The centrifuge spins rapidly. Ex. Separation of solid matter in blood from the liquid portion.
9
Decant To decant – pour the liquids off and leave the solids behind
10
Chromatography Used to separate components of a solution
Ex. Paper chromatography separate black ink into the colored dyes it contains
11
Distillation A method of separating substances that have different boiling points Ex. Separating alcohol from water Boiling pt of alcohol is 70 Celcius Boiling pt of water is 100 Celcius
12
Density Ratio of mass and volume
13
Update Notebook Paste or tape that notes on page 35
On page 34 You are going to draw all of those techniques in separating the mixtures
14
Evaporation can be used to separate a solute from the solvent in a solution
Review the terms; solution, solute and solvent.
16
A magnet Can be used to separate a magnetic substance from a non-magnetic substance Magnets are used in the re-cycling industry to separate ferrous and non ferrous metals.
