“Build It Up, and Break It Down!” Brian Carbonette Laboratory Engineer at NYIT School of Engineering and Computing Sciences Follow us on social media! @NYITSoECS Facebook.com/NYITSoECS @nyitsoecs

“Build It Up, and Break It Down!” What is an Engineer? An engineer creates things using Math, Science, or Technology. What is Technology? Technology is anything that’s made to make your life easier!

“Build It Up, and Break It Down!” Can you name things that make your life easier?

“Build It Up, and Break It Down!” What are some types of Engineers? Electrical Engineer Computer Engineer Mechanical Engineer Civil Engineer Chemical Engineer

“Build It Up, and Break It Down!” What is Civil Engineering? Civil engineering is building, designing and maintaining structures in the public domain.

“Build It Up, and Break It Down!” Some examples of Civil Engineering Projects

“Build It Up, and Break It Down!” #CivilEngEpicFail Tacoma Narrows Washington, 1940 Resonance frequencies

“Build It Up, and Break It Down!” You’re going to be civil engineers for the day! Instead of steel and concrete you’ll be using toothpicks and gumdrops!

“Build It Up, and Break It Down!” Structure Requirements Our Gumdrop Forts must be between 10” – 12” tall and our foundations must fit within the confines of a paper plate Hint:

“Build It Up, and Break It Down!” Did you say fort?! We’re building up our forts and then we’ll be breaking down our opponents forts with a projectile! We’ll be slinging gumdrops at our opponents structures via our home made catapults to see who’s designs are the strongest!

“Build It Up, and Break It Down!” Here’s how we’ll be constructing our catapults! Step 1…

“Build It Up, and Break It Down!” Step 2

“Build It Up, and Break It Down!” Step 3

“Build It Up, and Break It Down!” Step 4

“Build It Up, and Break It Down!” Step 5

“Build It Up, and Break It Down!” We’ll be working in teams of two! Find a partner and get to work! Each group will create one fort and one catapult! When time is up the groups will partner up with another group and compete (by firing gumdrops) to see who’s fort design is the strongest!
