CHEMICAL STORAGE CLASSIFICATION OBJECTIVE: UNDERSTAND HOW CHEMICALS ARE PROPERLY STORED IN A LABORATORY FACILITY CLASSIFY CHEMICAL EXAMPLES USING THE COLOR CODING SYSTEM LIST THE 5 COLOR CODES AND EXPLAIN THEIR MEANING

WHY DO WE HAVE A SYSTEM FOR CHEMICALS? The goal of any chemical storage classification is to prevent accidental combination. The goal of any chemical storage classification is to prevent accidental combination. To have a system to keep chemicals organized so they can be used effectively. To have a system to keep chemicals organized so they can be used effectively. To give chemicals adequate space to prevent unwanted reactions. To give chemicals adequate space to prevent unwanted reactions.

HOW DO WE STORE THEM? Always store according to the hazards class. Always store according to the hazards class. Flammable, Corrosive, Health, Reactivity Flammable, Corrosive, Health, Reactivity Physical Barriers are required. Physical Barriers are required. Separate Room Separate Room Identified cabinets Identified cabinets The uniform color-code system was developed by the J.T. Baker Chemical Company. The uniform color-code system was developed by the J.T. Baker Chemical Company. The color system is not universal. It is dependent upon the lab and what they adopt. The color system is not universal. It is dependent upon the lab and what they adopt.

THE COLOR-CODE Follows the color code of the NFPA or HMIS i.e. hazard triangle. New additions: Green/Gray: General Storage White: Contact hazard Chemicals also need to be alphabetized within their specific color code

WHAT IF A CHEMICAL IS CODED YELLOW AND REACTS WITH OTHER YELLOW CODED CHEMICALS? The color code will still be followed. The color code will still be followed. The chemical will be coded as yellow-reactive. The chemical will be coded as yellow-reactive. In addition the chemical will receive a white and yellow stripe to indicate it CAN NOT be stored with other yellow coded chemicals. In addition the chemical will receive a white and yellow stripe to indicate it CAN NOT be stored with other yellow coded chemicals.

CHEMICAL IS NOT LABELED BY THE COMPANY!? Most chemical companies will assign a color code. Most chemical companies will assign a color code. When a color code has not been established, then we follow the 5 simple steps in order to classify the chemical.
