© Hodder Education 2009 Why are families important? Although there are many types of families, they should all make sure that children have opportunities to play and develop. To do this, children need: love and care to feel safe and secure food and clothing a place to live.

5
© Hodder Education 2009 Some children do not live with their parents. They are called ‘looked-after children’. They may be adopted. They may be fostered. They may live in a residential care home.

© Hodder Education 2009 Modern-day families Families have changed. The older generation will tell you about how different things are now to ‘when I was your age…’! What changes have there been and what are the reasons for these changes?
7
© Hodder Education 2009 A multicultural family We now live in a multicultural society. Some families are from ethnic minority groups and there may be cultural differences with British families. As time goes on, there are likely to be more ‘mixed’ partnerships (where children have parents from different cultural backgrounds).

© Hodder Education 2009 Becoming a family Should we have a baby? Is it the right time? How can we prepare for a baby? How much will it cost? Will we be good parents? What effect will a baby have on our lifestyle? It is right for parents to carefully consider all these points.

© Hodder Education 2009 What is really important? A good relationship between the parents is very important. (A baby is not a cure for a bad relationship.) A baby should be wanted and loved, and should be considered worth the sacrifices.
