Today’s Main Idea Modern technology has helped to bring the world’s diverse peoples closer together. Give me an example of Technology.

I. Effects of Technology
Technology refers to the ability of humans to make things that help them and give them some control over their environment. The Agricultural Revolution began 10,000 years ago. The past 100 years, important transportation and communication technologies have emerged.

A. Transportation Transportation technologies, such as trains and steamboats, were important in settling the U.S. Today jet planes greatly reduce travel time, resulting in a shrinking world.

B. Communication Communication technologies such as the telephone, satellites, radio, television and the internet allow instant worldwide sharing of information. The internet, a global network of computers, is possible because of the available communication technologies, along with the invention of the computer and microchip.

Question What kinds of technologies are used by the Internet?
Telephone lines and cables, satellites, computers and microchips.

II. Globalization Civic participation refers to being an involved citizen and caring about the public affairs of your community, state, nation and world. People must be aware of both their rights and responsibilities. Rights are benefits and protections guaranteed to individuals by law. Responsibilities are duties owed to other citizens and the government.

Global Community It is important to learn about the beliefs and values of other people in the world Understand connections between them and our country Be an informed member of the global community. Today the world’s countries depend on one another for goods, raw materials, and markets to sell goods, resulting in interdependence among nations.

B. Globalization Globalization refers to the development of a world culture and interdependence among nations. Some people fear this might lead to the end of traditions and customs of smaller groups.

C. Importance to U.S. Why is it important for people in the United States to learn about the beliefs and values of people in other countries? Links the connection between the US and other countries Teaches respect each culture as being unique Aids in recognizing the common experiences that link all people resulting in informed members of the global community.
